We had the opportunity to interview Zenless Zone Zero Producer Zhenyu Li, Game Designer X and Y, diving deep into the transformative changes and ambitious plans in update 1.4. During our extensive conversation, they shared candid insights about their design philosophy, gameplay refinements, and their vision for New Eridu’s future.
Reimagining the Monitor Array System
The development team’s decision to overhaul the Monitor Array system represents one of the most significant post-launch adjustments. This change came in direct response to community feedback about the system’s impact on the main storyline experience.
“After the game’s release, we’ve heard a lot about the HDD Monitor Array, particularly regarding how it might disrupt the combat experience during the main storyline,” Li explained. The team’s solution reflects their player-first approach: “Our current goal is to give players the choice to engage with TV mode without feeling pushed into it. This means that those who aren’t enthusiastic about TV mode won’t find it affects their core experience, such as the Main Story missions.”
This strategic pivot allows the development team to focus on enhancing TV mode independently, making it more engaging for players who enjoy this content while ensuring it doesn’t interfere with the core gameplay experience. “After reducing the emphasis on TV mode, we can concentrate more on making it more enjoyable and playable, drawing on insights from our previous successful innovations to create more polished and engaging TV mode gameplay,” the team elaborated.
Evolution of Story and Character Roles
The restructuring of the Monitor Array system prompted questions about its impact on the game’s protagonists. However, the team was quick to reassure that these changes would enhance rather than diminish the narrative experience.
“Even though the HDD Monitor Array exploration mode won’t be part of the main storyline anymore, it doesn’t alter the roles of the protagonists Belle or Wise in the story,” the team affirmed. “They’re still the renowned Phaethon who meet characters from different factions and embark on adventures together in New Eridu.”
This transition has opened new creative avenues for storytelling. The team has innovatively repurposed elements from the TV mode: “We’ve transformed the box-pushing puzzle from TV mode into a pixel-art mini-game, adding a fun, fast-paced, and distinct visual style to the Main Story experience.” Players will also discover new ways to engage with the game world: “In some Main Story storylines, players will be able to control Eous to complete specific missions or interact with other Agents as Eous.”
Quality Time Mode: Deepening Character Connections
The introduction of Quality Time Mode represents the team’s commitment to creating meaningful character interactions beyond combat scenarios. This feature emerged from their exploration of how to enhance player-character relationships in the ARPG genre.
“As an ARPG, we’ve always been exploring new ways to enhance the interaction between players and game characters, fostering a deeper connection and bond,” the team shared. Their philosophy emphasizes the equal importance of character relationships and gameplay mechanics: “We believe character interaction is just as important as gameplay itself, and Quality Time is one of the outcomes of this exploration.”
The mode aims to create emotional resonance with players: “We hope it allows players to resonate emotionally and gain a deeper understanding of the stories behind the characters.”
Character Development: Hoshimi Miyabi’s Evolution
The evolution of Hoshimi Miyabi’s combat system offers a fascinating glimpse into the team’s character development process. Her transition from Ice Attack to Ice Anomaly since the first closed beta test up to update 1.4 in Zenless Zone Zero reflects careful consideration of both gameplay mechanics and character identity.
“We truly appreciate all the love and support you’ve shown for Hoshimi Miyabi since CB1,” the team acknowledged. The choice of the Frost attribute was deliberately made to enhance her character identity: “As we continue to develop the story of the youngest Void Hunter in New Eridu, we think the Frost attribute will really highlight her identity and combat abilities.”
The team elaborated on the mechanical implications of this change: “As the Frost attribute causes Disorder during its interaction with other attributes, we envision Hoshimi Miyabi playing a key role in combat as a Frost Attribute Anomaly Agent, making the gameplay even more engaging and fun.”
Future Content and Universe Expansion
When discussing the possibility of crossovers with other HoYoverse titles, the team maintained a clear focus on establishing the unique identity of Zenless Zone Zero within the gaming landscape through updates like 1.4. Their response emphasized their commitment to developing the game’s individual narrative: “The story of Zenless Zone Zero is just beginning, and our primary focus is on how to better present the story of New Eridu to everyone.”
This stance suggests a dedication to building a strong foundation for the game’s universe before considering potential crossovers, highlighting their priority of delivering a compelling and cohesive experience within New Eridu.
