A YuGiOh player has shared their story on Reddit, describing their parents accusing them of demonic practices by playing the popular card game.
In a thread on r/MasterDuel, user hyperdeeeee shared their modern-day experience of being accused of not only dragging themselves, but their 9 year-old brother down the path of Satan via demonic YuGiOh cards.
“Well, what do you know? Apparently, my parents make this whole fucking lecture saying how demonic the game is, that there’s spells and demonic art that can make us devil worshipers. Witchcraft is bad. It’s a dangerous game. God wouldn’t appreciate us worshipping sorcery and demonic beings”, they write.
“What the fuck? Do you think I’m going to summon a dragon out of my asshole and let it consume my life?”, they continued. “They made my little brother delete the game, his face so sad, and there goes our brother bondage of having fun together. Who knew Yugioh could be so dangerous and summon the Devil /s. I feel so sorry for my little bro who’s stuck with them and literally can’t play any other game except for fucking mario”
Other users also chimed in in the comments, sharing their own experiences of card-game-based persecution.
“Where Im from our local churches would pay you cash to bring in Yu-Gi-Oh cards and burn them. That was like 10 years ago tho”, writes one user.
Moral panic was all the rage back in the 90s, particularly after Pokemon got popular- from Harry Potter to Pikachu, if kids liked it then there was a good chance it was secretly satanic.
On the other hand though, not every parent is like that- last year saw the touching story of a family honoring their late son’s love of YuGiOh with a custom tombstone.
