Mobile CCG Yu Gi Oh Duel Links is bound for a big shakeup as the new Zexal World update launches today. The update adds cards and mechanics from the Yu Gi Oh Zexal anime, such as the Xyz (pronounced exceed) summoning type.
In addition to the new cards, new characters will also be added to the game. These include protagonists Yuma and Astral (as one character), Bronk Stone and Tori Meadows. Additionally. Reginald Kastle will also be added to the game.
Konami has confirmed the following items as rewards for players who log in to the game:
- 1 Skill Ticket for a character added before September 8, 2020
- 1,000 Gems
- SR Zubaba General (Prismatic)
- UR Gagaga Magician (Prismatic)
- Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal Card Sleeves
- Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal Game Mat
While they haven’t revealed the full list of Xyz cards coming to Duel Links, anime darling Number 039: Utopia has been confirmed to be in the game. In the anime, it is the signature xyz card of the protagonist, Yuma Tsukumo.
Also coming to the game is UR card Gagaga Magician. While not an Xyz monster, it’s an important card for any Xyz deck due to its ability to alter its own level, allowing you to get your Xyz monsters out easier. However, those thinking to use it for 5D’s Synchro summoning will be in for a bad time as its ability also prevents it from using the mechanic. Note that these are all based on the card’s effects for the regular CCG, and might be subject to balance changes for Duel Links.
The ABCs of Yyz
So how does Xyz summoning work? Xyz monsters are powerful extra deck monsters that can be summoned by overlaying two monsters. They don’t technically have levels like other monsters, instead having “ranks”. Therefore, the two overlaid monsters will have to be the same level as the summoned monster’s rank.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Duel Links adopts the Xyz mechanic, especially given the game’s unique format of the regular Yu Gi Oh CCG. As duel links has less room for monsters on the field, that means every monster you put down will matter when it comes to getting your big Xyz’s out.
