Gung Ho has just announced that it will be terminating the services for Yokai Watch World on 23 December 2022. The Android and iPhone title first made its debut on 27 June 2018, giving it a run of approximately 4.5 years before shutting down.

The news came by way of the game’s website and Twitter account. Sale of all premium currency has ceased with immediate effect. As it is customary, all unused paid currency will be refunded to all users by the end of the service, although details on this will be disclosed at a later date. It is worth noting that when the servers go down, there will be an update to the app which will allow users to browse a map of Japan with Yokai records. For the uninitiated, Yokai Watch World is Gung Ho’s take on the Pokemon GO formula, where it fully utilises Google Maps and boasts real-time battles with augmented reality. In other words, you go out exploring in the world and do battles at the same time. Despite the World in its moniker, the game never got an international release and remained a Japan exclusive, so there’s that.
