In a recent announcement on the official Xbox podcast, Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan confirmed that the highly anticipated Fable reboot has been delayed from its previously announced 2025 release window to 2026.
“We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025, we are actually going to give Fable more time and it’s going to ship in 2026 now,” Duncan stated during the podcast. “While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait.”
Duncan expressed strong confidence in developer Playground Games, known for their critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series. “I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team,” he said. “If you think about their history and legacy for Forza Horizon, the last two games critically acclaimed, 92 Metacritic, award-winning, beautiful, played great, and just what they’re bringing to Fable as a franchise.”

He emphasized that the delay would result in “the most beautifully realized version of Albion you’ve ever seen” and assured fans that the decision was made “for the best of the games, and the teams, and ultimately that results in the best games, or the best game for the community.”
Fable was officially announced in June 2024 with an initial release window of this year. The game is being developed by Playground Games in collaboration with Eidos Montreal, whose last release was 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy – a game that received positive reviews but failed to meet Square Enix’s sales expectations. When released, Fable will be available on Xbox Game Pass for both Xbox and PC on day one.
