The Xbox Series S has outsold the PS5 in Japan this week, making this the first time that an Xbox console has outsold a PlayStation console since 2014.
This information comes from Famitsu. Between May 9th and May 15th, the Xbox Series S sold 6,120 units while the disc and digital versions of the PS5 sold 2,240 and 493 units for a combined total of 2,693 units sold.
A reason for this change can likely be attributed to the stock shortages of the PS5 which Sony confirmed would continue into 2022. The Xbox Series S and X however have more units to go around and are easier to purchase.
Not since the launch of the Xbox One has Xbox outsold PlayStation in Japan.

By comparison, both consoles’ sales paled in comparison to the Nintendo Switch, which sold 65,322 so it’s not like either Xbox or Playstation were the “winner” of last week.
The sales however are still somewhat significant as the Xbox consoles typically don’t sell well in Japan as the market tends to favor Japanese brands like Sony and Nintendo.
While this week’s sales are probably the exception rather than the rule, it is still good news for Microsoft which has said that they hope for the Xbox Series X to further win over the Japanese market.
In 2021 the Xbox Series X has already outpaced the sales of the Xbox One in the country so it looks that the brand may be making some headway, albeit while still behind its homegrown competitors.
