Following massive layoffs at Hasbro and rumors due to a job listing, Wizards at the Coast has promised that they will not be pivoting to AI art for Magic: The Gathering (MTG).
In a statement today, they confirmed that they would not be resorting to using software built on illegally sourced artwork to generate art for all their sets.
“For 30 years, Magic: The Gathering has been built on the innovation, ingenuity, and hard work of talented people who sculpt a beautiful, creative game. That isn’t changing”, the statement reads.
“Our internal guidelines remain the same with regard to artificial intelligence tools: We require artists, writers, and creatives contributing to the Magic TCG to refrain from using AI generative tools to create final Magic products. We work with some of the most talented artists and creatives in the world, and we believe those people are what makes Magic great”, it continues.
The statement was issued in response to a rumor born of a job listing for Wizards of the Coast, looking for an artist to “Use your digital retouching wizardry to extend cropped characters and adjust visual elements due to legal and art direction requirements.”
Many had assumed the description meant to clean up any errors as a result from AI generation such as weird hands, et cetera, especially considering the number of cards in an MTG set.
While this is great news for the integrity of MTG it’s a bitter pill set against the previously mentioned layoffs- internal communications revealed that Hasbro was set to lay off a total of 1100 employees just before the holiday season.
