Blizzard are working on a Warcraft Mobile game, according to one of their artists who posted a job listing related to the project. This is in line with previous information released to investors related to “multiple” mobile experiences for the cornerstone IP.
Clayton Chod, a 3D artist over at Blizzard Entertainment posted a tweet recently linking to a now-removed job listing, confirming that the game had been in production for a while, at least the length of Chod’s time at Blizzard.
“We’ve updated the description of our latest environment art job opening. We are indeed working on a Warcraft Mobile game. I’ve actually been working on this game for most of my time at Blizzard and it really is an amazing team!”, the tweet reads.,
According to his Linkedin that means the game’s actually been in production since 2016, though it’s not been mentioned in any of the Blizzcons since. This does line up with a recent investor call with Activision Blizzard CEO Robert “Bobby” Kotick, who mentioned that “multiple free-to-play” mobile games were being worked on with the Warhammer IP.
“In our Warcraft franchise, we intend to deliver more frequent premium content to sustain and expand the World of Warcraft community and we’ve made multiple mobile free-to-play Warcraft experiences and they’re now in advanced development, based on our franchise’s beloved IP.”, Kotick said. “This will create opportunities for both existing players and new fans to experience the Warcraft universe in entirely new ways”.
It’s not surprising that Blizzard is moving more towards the mobile market, after the runaway success of its mobile Diablo title Diablo Immortal and its Technical Alpha. Candy Crush maker King is also a part of Activision Blizzard, with Candy Crush still being one of the most played mobile games in the market.
Blizzard hasn’t commented on any Warcraft mobile games on their official channels, so it’ll be up to them when we know more about them.
