A year after the release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Shodown, the game is collaborating with the King of Iron Fist Tournament with its latest DLC based on Tekken.
The DLC brings the game Tekken-inspired costumes for the entire roster, 20 tracks of music from Tekken and even changing the combat UI to match that of Tekken 7. It’s a lot of cool content that might even convince some Tekken fans to give Virtua Fighter a shot (or vice versa), so let’s take a closer look.
The costumes look great. Each is detailed to the point that from a distance, you may not even release that you’re playing Virtua Fighter. Many of the costumes are also very fitting for the characters with Akira dressing like Kazuya, El Blaze as King, and Jacky Bryant as Paul Phoenix.
Other costumes while still looking good don’t match the Virtua Fighter character with the Tekken character quite as well. For example, Pai Chan is paired up with Lili. Now I love Lili, but wouldn’t Xiaoyu make more sense? Eileen having an Alisa costume also means that you can now live out your darkest fantasy of having Alisa pretend to be a monkey.
What makes this package even better though is the UI costume change. By making a quick switch in the game’s settings you can change the Virtua Fighter 5 battle UI to that of Tekken 7’s. With this the disguise is complete and you can totally trick your friends into playing Virtua Fighter under the promise of seeing Fahkumram.
In all honesty, this is a pretty sweet collaboration. Virtua Fighter is of course the first-ever 3D fighting and paved the way for games like Tekken to innovate in the genre. As such seeing the two come together in the form of cool costumes makes for some sweet fanservice that is sure to please fans of both franchises and 3D fighting game fans in general.
So for the next costume DLC, how about the other big 3D hand-to-hand combat fighting game: Dead or Alive. A few Virtua Fighter characters did guest star in DOA5 after all and I bet some of those costumes could be pretty, spicy.
Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Shodown is the latest iteration of Virtua Fighter 5. It is available on PS4.
