Unity Software, the developers of the popular Unity engine is facing massive layoffs, with global offices like Singapore as well as employees on the chopping block.
A report by Reuters confirms the layoffs at Unity- with 265 employees set to be laid off following the termination of an agreement between Unity and Lord of The Rings studio Weta FX.
Additionally, Unity itself is in the middle of what it describes as a “reset”- with offices all around the world including Singapore and Berlin set to close down.
This isn’t even the first round of layoffs for the software company- they had their third round in May, with plans to globally downsize the company.
The May layoffs saw the exit of 600 employees- roughly 8% of the company’s global workforce.
Despite being one of the most popular engines for game development, Unity has found itself in dire straits this year- it became the target of ire online after announcing their desire to start charging developers a runtime fee- essentially asking for royalties for every time someone downloaded a Unity-made game.
The decision was a massive PR blunder for the company, and ultimately led to the stepping down of former CEO John Riccitello– largely viewed as the face of the controversial decision.
