ATLUS and Vanillaware have announced Unicorn Overlord, an upcoming tactics game coming to Nintendo Switch.
Unicorn Overlord is coming to the console on March 8th, 2024, with no further platform announcements as of this writing.
Despite being described as a Tactical Fantasy RPG in the trailer, the game’s combat system is a little harder to explain at a glance, instead having you line up units on a 3×2 grid and fighting more akin to your traditional JRPG.
Units still have things like hit percentages as well as different guard types, affecting their ability to take damage.
That being said, the trailer does show a second overworld-style combat, where you’ll be able to attack other squads on the map via special abilities.
Interestingly enough, it also teases online battles- seemingly letting you save your armies and battle other player’s units as well as an offline Coliseum mode.
It also features a large map to traverse, as well as over 60 uniquely designed characters in a fantasy story set across multiple warring nations.
The game will also feature a renown system, letting you complete deeds to build your character’s reputation, though its effect on gameplay has yet to be revealed.
Vanillaware are best known for 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, their cult-classic visual novel featuring giant robots and time travel.
