Today’s Ubisoft Forward event has shown off new details for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage, such as its more stealth-focused gameplay.
As previously announced, Assassin’s Creed Mirage sees the return to Baghdad, the setting of the original Assassin’s Creed game.
The new trailer gives us a better look at Basim- the new main character, who joins a group known as the Hidden Ones after idolizing them following the loss of his mother.
Naturally, he ends up joining the Hidden Ones- and moves through the ranks under the tutelage of Roshan, a veteran Assassin.
Ubisoft describes the series as an homage to the original Assassin’s Creed- expanding on the original’s combat and moving away from the RPG that more recent entries had become.
This includes a return to the more stealth-oriented gameplay- with Basim having to create diversions and use tools like the blowdart to quietly subdue guards without drawing attention.
One feature from newer games that does return is having a bird companion- you can use your bird, Enkidu, to perform reconnaissance, marking assassination targets.
That being said, the demo shows that Basim will have to clear out watchtowers with marksmen to use Enkidu- adding another layer to the assassination game.
One feature that’s brand new though is what appears to be a warp strike- Basim can chain multiple targets together, seemingly teleporting between them at the cost of a focus bar.
As with many older Assassin’s Creed games, you’ll also have a variety of tools to get you out of trouble when you’re spotted- such as a smoke bomb to help escape in the confusion.
While the gameplay demo does focus more on stealth and infiltration, it looks like there will be options for more aggressive assassins- the demo also briefly shows a parry mechanic timed to guards attacks.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage releases on October 12, 2023, and the game is available for preorder now.
