Following some backlash, the developers of Tower of Fantasy have apologized over a lack of Cross Progression or Cross Play for the game’s PlayStation release.
In a statement on their website, they clarified that they originally intended the PS4 and PS5 versions of Tower of Fantasy to allow for Cross Progression, though they blamed “Server deployment” for the feature’s absence.
“Level Infinite and Perfect World Games sought to identify and implement cross-platform solutions during development of the PlayStation version. We discussed and explored the situation at great length”, the statement reads. “Ultimately, due to cross-platform storage server deployment, we have yet to find a solution to make cross-progression a reality. We know this is disappointing to some and we’re also sad that we aren’t able to meet our players’ expectations this time”.
The statement doesn’t go into further specifics about what cross-platform storage server deployment even is, especially since the game already sports cross progression between Mobile and PC.
The decision not to extend this feature to PlayStation is a potentially huge blow to the game’s console playerbase- rather than opting for a potentially upgraded experience by jumping to consoles, the version will only appeal to new players on the platform.
This doesn’t rule out the possibility entirely, however- its direct competitor, Genshin Impact also launched in a similar state, with cross progression only being patched in a year later.
