For the unfamiliar, gameplay is essentially an auto-battler, forming a squad of up to six swords and sending them out to maps to fight. The characters are based on famous historical swords, their personalities and design taking into consideration their past and their owners. The franchise has branched into multimedia, from stage plays and musicals, manga and anime, and even collaborations with museums that house the blades.
The story blurb for Touken Ranbu on the Johren portal is given as follows:
The year is 2205. Revisionists seeking to change history have begun to attack the past. The “Saniwa”, who has been given the task of protecting the history, heads back in time with “Touken Danshi”, the fabled swords that have taken the forms of powerful warrior.
There is a note stating: “There will be some partial difference from “Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-” Japanese version.”
