Introduction
Tom & Jerry Chase is published by NetEase Games and developed by Warner Bros., Interactive Entertainment and is available for both Android and iOS devices. The game was released globally just a few days ago on the 20th of August globally.
Gameplay
Tom & Jerry Chase is multiplayer, 2D Side-Scroller, Action game where the main gameplay is quite literally a game of cat and mouse. The game starts off where the players can choose between either the Cat faction or the Mouse faction.
During a match, there’ll only be 1 cat against 4 mice and they have to face off against each other in a house filled with traps and various of different objects that are scattered throughout the place.
The goal of the cat is to trap the four mice by first catching them using the cat’s skills and when the mouse is unable to move, the cat needs to trap them on a rocket that’s placed somewhere in the house to eliminate them. Whereas the goal of the mice to survive as long as they can and collect cheese and bring them back to their mice hole.
The pros of choosing the cat faction would be that you’d get to have a bigger life pool as well as faster movement than the mice and on the other side of the coin, the pros of choosing the mice faction would be that you’d get play as a team with 3 other mice.
Matchmaking
The time it took for us to find a match was super fast where it took merely 2 seconds to find a match here in South East Asia. It goes to show that there’s quite a number of people that are playing the game.
One match would take you around 10 minutes to play with an additional 50 seconds of scouting phase where players get to look around the map before the match starts.
Controls
The controls are relatively simple where the left side of your device is your movement key of left and right while the right side is your main action buttons which compromises of 4 different kinds of actions (Free Attack, All-in-one, Free-interaction, and Free mode).
And speaking of your action skills, you’re able to upgrade them during the match through getting EXP from progressing during the match which is indicated by the yellow “plus sign”.
While the key bindings are simple enough to get into, players also get the option to change the key bindings to their own liking as well so that’s always a plus.
Visuals & Sound
The aesthetics for Tom & Jerry chase is very reminiscent of the classic 90s TV cartoon series where if you grew up watching cartoons during your childhood, you’ll most definitely like the style of the game. The in game HUD during the match can feel a bit cluttered but it’s not at the point that it’s unbearable so it’s pretty easy to gloss over that.
The sound design of the game is pretty good too, where the background music and sound effects all feel really nostalgic towards the 90s era of cartoon shows with its exaggerated sound effects and it’s great. None of the characters in the game are voice acted except for Madame (who in the show is Tom & Jerry’s house owner) and she acts as the announcer of the game.
Other Features
The game features gacha pulls for cosmetics but instead of getting the character costume right off the bat, you get costume tokens in which is used to redeem for the character costumes and these tokens are costume exclusive. But there’s some costumes need exclusive resources called skin gems and normal gems where some other costumes require coins and skin gems instead.
These different skins have each individual skills which can be further enhanced through leveling up using different kinds of resources which affects gameplay by a little.
There’s also different kinds of game modes which range from Classic, Ranked, Parkour and Casual.
The game also has a season pass which is both free and premium which can be nice form of progression players can look forward to to increase the game’s longevity. The game also has a leaderboard to show the top ranking players and it also support different languages such as
- English
- Indonesian
- Thai
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
The prices for the premium currency for the games range from the lowest of 60 Gems for $0.99 till the highest of 6000 Gems for $99.99. And for reference, the minimum amount of Gems needed for the cheapest skin in the store is 268 Gems alongside with other in-game resources.
Opinion
The gameplay for Tom & Jerry Chase is relatively decent in terms where the game is easy to get into with its simple controls and gameplay but it has just enough depth to keep players engaged in the game with its individual character skills and skills level up system.
The game is more catered to fans who grew up watching Tom and Jerry rather than the players who’ve never heard or watched the TV cartoon series since it pays tribute where it also shows familiar characters and also cosmetics in certain episodes as well as the artstyle.
Pros | Cons |
Easy to get into mechanics & controls | Gacha is a turn off with the way since you have to get character specific tokens of the costume you want rather than the costume itself. |
Nostalgic Artstyle & Sound design | Not really suitable for players who aren’t interested in the series |
Great for fans of the series | Gameplay might get bland after a while |
Final Score
7 / 10
