Popular yankī shōnen anime series Tokyo Revengers just confirmed a new anime sequel is in the works, as well as a mini spin-off series.
Alongside a new sequel announcement, the series also has plans to celebrate the anime’s anniversary in 2025 with a bang.
The spin-off mini series in the works is a new chibi gag series called Fairy Tale Revengers, which will retell classic fairy tales with Tokyo Revengers characters – starting with the first episode revealed to be based on the famous Japanese folktale Momotarō.
Adapted from a manga series written and illustrated by Ken Wakui, which began its run in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine in March 2017, the anime series is produced by LIDENFILMS, the studio behind Call of the Night and the 2023 reboot of Rurouni Kenshin.
The premise of the manga is as follows:
Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his six-years-younger boss treats him like an idiot. Plus, he’s a complete and total virgin … At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days!! To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang!!
So far, the anime has aired 3 seasons, with the first aired in 2021 with 24 episodes, while season 2, titled Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown Arc aired in Winter 2023 with 13 episodes.
The third season, Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku Arc, aired in the Fall 2023 anime season with 13 total episodes, with now a sequel announced.
The fourth season is expected to cover the Bonten Arc of the manga, which spans only 20 chapters – there may also be a possibility that Bonten Arc may end up being a movie due to its shortness while the sequel covers subsequent arcs.
