One might be forgiven to think that 2020 is the year of nostalgia, with Tokyo Mew Mew teasing a new project! Currently, it’s only a website with a countdown due to end on 2 April. Written by Reiko Yoshida and illustrated by Mai Ikumi, the magical girl series will reveal more news in the April 2020 issue of Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine. The magazine itself will go on sale 3 March, so we’ll see if they reveal the exact nature of the project in the issue.
Most recently, Digimon Last Evolution Kizuna is in theaters in Japan, bringing an end to the original Digimon Adventure series. Granted, Adventure is being remade as Psi, so that’s only one part of the story.
In this vein, this Tokyo Mew Mew new project could want to bring in new fans as well as appealing to the old ones. The manga series ran from 2000 to 2003 and had released two games – Hamepane Tokyo Mew Mew for the GBA and Tokyo Mew Mew – Tōjō Shin Mew Mew! – Minna Issho ni Gohōshi Suru Nyan for the Playstation. The games only saw release in Japan. There was another manga series in Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode that ran from April 2003 to to February 2004.
Whatever it is, slumbering fans have something to look forward to.
