Japanese entertainment powerhouse Toho has announced its acquisition of GKIDS, the North American distributor renowned for bringing acclaimed animated films to audiences across the continent. The deal grants Toho 100% equity in GKIDS, though specific financial details were not disclosed.
For consumers, this acquisition could potentially lead to improved access to Toho’s films and TV shows in North America. GKIDS, known for its impressive track record including 13 Academy Award nominations and a recent Best Animated Film Oscar win for The Boy and the Heron, will continue to operate as before. The company serves as the North American distributor for Studio Ghibli’s esteemed library of films, complementing Toho’s distribution role for these movies in Japan.
This strategic move significantly bolsters Toho’s distribution capabilities in North America. The company, famous for properties like Godzilla and hit anime series such as My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, aims to strengthen connections between its Japanese and international productions, creators, and studios with overseas audiences.
GKIDS founder and CEO Eric Beckman, along with president Dave Jesteadt, assured that the company will maintain its current operations, team, and mission, now backed by Toho’s resources. They expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the potential to bring more exceptional films to North American and global audiences while continuing to promote animation as a cinematic art form. This acquisition is part of Toho’s broader expansion strategy, which also includes the purchase of Japanese animation studio Science SARU and an investment in Los Angeles-based production and distribution company Fifth Season.
