Tencent Games announced a new mobile game based on the Journey to the West comic by Hong Kong comic writers Zheng Jianhe and Deng Zhihui, dubbed The Westward: Burning Soul. It’s not the first mobile game adaptation the comic has received, previously also having at least one other in Westward M, by Abjuice.
Tencent also announced The Westward: Burning Soul today.
It is a mobile game based on the comic IP of the same name which also has a popular TV animation. It is the first core game developed by Kuaishou's echo game studio.

The Westward: Burning Soul seems to be a third person action RPG. It certainly looks much more visually impressive compared to Westward M‘s take, with various locations fully rendered, various attack combos and skill effects flying about, larger than life bosses and of course, flashy moves. From the teaser, there appears to be a fighting game-esque PVP mode, with two characters per player. Check out some of the screenshots taken from the preview below:
As with many China releases, it’ll be pretty up in the air about whether if it’ll be made available internationally. Sure, the comic may not be well known outside of Asian circles, but considering the explosive popularity of something like Black Myth: Wukong, the tales as a whole can be considered pretty universal.
The game will be conducting its first closed beta test on 2 June 2021, so keep an eye out to learn more.
