XSEED Games announced that Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town has become the company’s fastest-selling title to reach 100,000 units on a single platform in North America, which was previously held by the first release in the renamed series on the Nintendo 3DS, Story of Seasons. The expanded remake of the 2003 Game Boy Advance farming/life sim reached the milestone on Nintendo Switch within one week after launching on 14 July 2020. We reviewed it here. The game achieved a 78 Metacritic score, and 96% positive user reviews on Steam.
Rune Factory 4Special, the fantasy-themed spin-off of Story of Seasons, also achieved the same sales milestone in North America. The game launched for the Nintendo Switch 25 February 2020, taking less than 5 months to hit 100,000 units. Combining farming and dungeon adventuring and a host of additions for the remaster, it achieved a 81 Metacritic score. Our review is here.
If you’re a fan of a more traditional life sim game, then pick up the remake Friends of Mineral Town. It sees a variety of quality of life changes, as well as the ability to romance a character of the same gender for those who prefer it. If you’d rather have something closer to Stardew Valley, then Rune Factory 4 Special has the balance of farming and monster mashing for the more action-oriented farmer.
