It’s the dawn of a new year, and Samsung is coming out swinging with the start of their 2022 reveals for their Galaxy line-up. See what’s in store!
SAMSUNG GALAXY S22 SERIES
A new era for Galaxy cannot possibly miss out on a new flagship series, consisting of the base S22, S22+ and the S22 Ultra, the last of which naturally being the top of the line. These new smartphones are meant to be Samsung’s platform for new, innovative mobile experiences, so let’s have a look at what you can get into your hands.
All three phones utilize Armor Aluminum in their build, with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ front and back. The S22 and S22+ has an upgraded linear camera setup, with colours and design to look more uniform. The S22 and S22+ has Phantom White, Phantom Black, Green and Pink Gold colour options, while the Ultra has Burgundy instead of Pink Gold.
Accordingly, the OS is also updated, with One UI 4. The latest version has a focus on customization and privacy controls. You get a dashboard to manage your privacy settings. You get an indicator for camera and/or microphone usage for a relevant app, which you can turn off at any point. As part of the whole device ecosystem, Samsung has partnered with Google to improve Google Duo, and you can link to Windows via Microsoft.
Moving on to the display, we have Intelligent Display to analyze your environs to automatically optimize viewing, with Outdoor Visibility as a new algorithm to get you that always pristine image even in direct sunlight. At a 1750nits peak brightness for the Ultra and Plus models, it’s the brightest displays on the Galaxy S22 series yet, available at 120Hz refresh rate across the 6.1-inch S22, 6.6-inch S22+ and 6.8-inch for the Ultra.
The hardware and camera in the base series share quite a number of features with the Ultra, so might as well let the Ultra steal the show.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S22 ULTRA
As befitting its name, the S22 Ultra comes packed with a staggering array of features. Besides having the features of the S22 and S22+, the Ultra version has a built-in S-Pen too.
Thanks to the S-Pen, that’s productivity assured for its first outing in the Galaxy S series. The pen itself maintains its 5000mAh battery capacity, but its functions have been improved. Latency has been reduced from 9ms to 2.8ms thanks to enhanced AI-based coordinate prediction tech and upgraded Wacom handwriting component. The handwriting to text feature now has a higher recognition rate, and supports 88 languages (an additional 12). Samsung Notes gets the Quick Note feature for easy attachments via Pop Up Note, and Collaboration View for multi-device usage.
Productivity assured, we move on to the camera. The faster NPU means the AI camera can do more, quicker. Its incredible performance in low light one of, if not the biggest highlights for the camera setup, in Nightography and its many supplementary algorithms. Of course, that’s not all it has:
- Partnership with Snapchat to offer Super Resolution and Night Mode while in-app
- Supports AI-based Auto Focus, Super Steady System, Super HDR
- Auto Framerate to automatically adjust FPS to light conditions
- Auto Framing that can detect people within 5m and tracks up to 10 people to keep them in the same frame
- Portrait Mode with AI Stereo Depth Map to make photos pop more naturally with more detail, with studio lighting features
- Expert RAW, a separate free app for professionals to save RAW files for in-post edits with settings that rival DSLR cameras
All this runs off a 4nm processor, offering enhanced security and the faster Neural Processor Unit (NPU) that’s twice as fast as the S21. You can also enjoy high throughput and low latency, with up to 30% savings in power consumption thanks to Samsung Intelligent Software Algorithm, that doesn’t sacrifice performance.
The Galaxy S22 series will be locally available through Samsung’s website, carriers and retailers online from 10 February 2022.

GALAXY FOR THE PLANET
With all these tech, Samsung is also moving forward in their conservation efforts. They’ve set four environmental goals they aim to achieve in their operations and products by 2025:
- Recycled materials in mobile products
- Eliminate plastic packaging
- Zero standby power consumption for chargers
- Diverting waste from landfills
Packaging volume has been reduced (the S22 features a 19% reduced volume from the S21, 56% from the S20), for starters. They’ve repurposed fishing nets, and utilizing packaging made from 100% recycled paper, and 20% post-consumer materials. You don’t need to sacrifice the latest tech to go green!
What’s got you the most excited with this Samsung Galaxy 2022 reveal? The year is young yet!
