The Super Mario Bros movie has revealed a new teaser trailer at the Super Bowl and it brings back the Mario Rap from the Super Mario Bros Super Show. It’s great.
This is clearly meant to be an in-universe ad for Mario and Luigi’s plumbing service and it is a pretty well-animated one. You can even see the green screen they’re using clipping through at points for some extra authenticity.
To clarify a little the rap number comes from the 1989 Mario cartoon adaption, The Super Mario Bros Super Show.
If you haven’t heard about it, you’re not missing out on much, it wasn’t very good. The show featured the Mario Bros, plus Peach, I mean, Princess Toadstool, and Toad traveling across different worlds to stop the plans of the nefarious Bowser, excuse me again, King Koopa. It was very formulaic and filled with bad animation and pasta puns because Italians.
That being said, the rap number for the opening has reached a point of being so bad it’s good hence it being brought back. The show also contains some live actions scenes with WWE wrestler Captain Louis Vincent Albano playing Mario. While these also aren’t the best, there’s a great PSA where he tells kids they’ll go to hell before they die if they do drugs. Who says Nintendo was always child friendly?
What I wouldn’t give to hear Chris Pratt make this speech.
The new Illumination Super Mario Bros Movie comes out in April of 2023.
