The Lego Movie 2 Game Review: An Action-packed Lego World

The Lego Movie 2 Game, where players get to play as their favorite characters from the Lego Movie 2. The game was released recently and we were lucky enough to get our hands on it. For those unfamiliar with the game, it is based of the movie; The Lego Movie 2 which was in theaters not that long ago. However, I would recommend that the players watch the show beforehand they play the game. As the game itself does not retell the movie in a linear fashion.

Anyone who’s a fan of movie-based Lego game should be familiar with how the game works. Stories retold in a series of missions while unlocking characters as you punch your way through the adventure. Most importantly, rebuilding Lego blocks from a pile of Lego scraps which is quite the trademark of the game. On the other hand, this new Lego game here is rather different as it breaks the traditional format for not fulfilling the things above.

Introduction

Putting all that aside, let’s focus on what the new game have to offer. Just like the movie, it all starts in Apocalyseburg with the players controlling Emmet.

The Lego Movie 2 Game is much of a free-roaming open-world game, with no lengthy main story missions. Players wandering around the environment in search for Master Pieces to unlock new planets, which can also be acquired through some missions. While in the game, there will be a yellow indicator that points you to your main story quest or you can just ignore that and explore the planet. Like the rest of the Lego games, you can obtain bits (in-game currency) and Lego bricks by destroying objects around the environment. Besides that, the combat is simple which makes it easy for kids to play. Punching and breaking stuff is still pretty fun in the world of Lego.  However, there are times when the camera goes a bit crazy.

Gameplay

Well, they did introduce a bunch of new game mechanics to The Lego Movie 2 Game. You’ll start off by learning how to use build mode which allows you to build various objects. As you progress, more objects will be added into your collection that will help you in advancing the story.

Aside from that, players will acquire a number of fun tools as they play- builder page that is introduced from the start, a gun that shoots out sticker, item scanner that adds new object into your collection, a pair of power gloves to bust through walls and many more.

When in combat, the game will prompt the players to use a build attack if a certain of combo is reached. Allowing players to crush nearby fouls. Another cool thing they added is the relic, which can be found in hidden chest around the planet. It works similarly to a Gacha system because there is various relics that contain various loots. Opening it up will give you a chance of unlocking new characters, new objects to build and various more.

Verdict

Overall, The Lego Movie 2 Game is still pretty fun to play with. All the actions, puzzle-solving, and favorite characters in the game. What is not to like? Plus, the world is built on Lego pieces and not make use of non-brick scenery. Making it all bright and beautiful, very pleasing to the eyes.

Still, they should have just stick to the previous movie-based Lego game formula. It’s just not the same anymore like how there’s no glowing pile of Lego for you to smash and then reassemble into a new puzzle. With all that said, it is still a pretty decent game to play which I enjoyed.
