On 4 March 2021, Victor Entertainment Games announced that it will be shutting down The King of Fighters for Girls, its otome game for the Android and iOS platforms. The game first came out in Japan in November 2019, which would have seen service run for just about over a year.
To recap, players took on the role of a young woman who finds work at a gym where these fighters go to, and it progressed from there. She is to be then managing them as well as they aim for the King of Fighters tournament. This was definitely quite odd genre turn for a game that has been since inception, a fighting game. With the franchise having reached maturity a long time ago, it was certainly interesting to see how it will perform by venturing to other genres, but as we know now, it did not fare as well as expected.

Despite the failure of The King of Fighters for Girls, it is reassuring to know that the King of Fighters franchise as a whole still is still beloved, seeing as how the new flagship game is in the works. Regardless, it is highly unlikely that we will stop seeing spinoffs like this, given how lucrative it is to do them.
