God of War 2018 has brought us through an amazing journey leaving us with many mysteries that left our minds boggling. There are a couple of things to mention about the game’s lore which could foreshadow what is to come in the upcoming DLCs. Though it was mentioned in a spoil-cast that there will be no DLCs, we chose to believe that the DLCs will come in the form as unlockable areas of the remaining 3 realms that we are blocked out of access.
We know that based on Norse mythology, there are 9 realms. The one realm that we all know and already been to is Midgard, the land that Kratos and Atreus has been living in. Other realms that are accessible to us through the bifrost are Alfheim – home of the light and dark elves, Helheim – the Norse underworld, Jotunheim – the land of the giants, Muspelheim – the fiery homeland of the Fire Giants and Niflheim – the icy, cold and mysterious realm. While the last three realms which are Asgard – home of the Aesir gods, Vanaheim – the realm of the Vanir gods and Svartalfheim – where the Dwarves dwell. These three realms are as mentioned, expected to be accessible when the time comes.
[SPOILER ALERT] If you have not played through, at least to the middle of the game towards the ending, you might not want to read further. Don’t say I didn’t warn ‘ya!
But wait, there’s more! While we were messing around in Odin’s Secret Chamber in Helheim, we discovered Tyr’s missing panel. That missing Panel serves as a very important piece of information that foreshadows future contents. Let’s take a look at the screenshot below.
Olympus, Egypt, Japan, Celtic
As seen above, from the top left corner in clockwise we have the Eye of the Horus from Egypt, followed by the Omega from Greek, the Triskele from Celtic and finally the Mitsudomoe from the Japanese Tomoe symbol. These symbols are not runic symbols as explained by Mimir, they are symbols of lands and one of which Kratos is very familiar of. It seems that there was a war going on between these lands and we could say that the gods from these lands were at war. These gods from different lands are all connected which explains why Zeus was in Helheim when Kratos was there right after he ripped the heart off the Gatekeeper of the Bridge of the Damned.
While the game does not allow us to travel to the other 3 realms yet, we now know that there are other gods that are involved in an ongoing war with the other 3 lands mentioned above. This will probably be released in future God of War titles which will bring Kratos and Atreus to other lands, either to end the war or to discover the whole truth about these gods and how they are all connected. As mentioned by Kratos in one of the scene with Atreus when he killed Modi, son of Thor.
“We’re gods, boy… and that makes us a target. From now until the end of days, you are marked. So I teach you to kill, yes… but in defense of yourself. Never as an indulgence.”
“There are consequences to killing a god.” – Kratos
Loki the bringer of Ragnarok
Just as stated by Kratos in the scene, they are marked for life just being a god. So there’s a possibility when Kratos and Atreus decides to go land hopping, they will be attacked for that very sole reason. The killing of a god will bring catastrophe in which based on Norse mythology, the death of Baldur would ignite Ragnarok. Ragnarok is described as a series of events that will take place before the world could be reborn. It foretells a great battle ahead which would result in the death of major characters or gods like Odin, Thor and even Loki. But in this case, Loki, who’s actually another name of Atreus, would probably not die during Ragnarok.
Loki, being another name that Atreus was called by the Giants, may be the true nature of Atreus himself. It was speculated that in the future, Atreus will take on the characteristics of Loki. As we recall in one of the scenes in Tyr’s Vault where Kratos was held down by the roots, Atreus had to use his mother’s knife to stop the mechanism from killing his dad. After Kratos was saved, we hear Kratos called Atreus, cunning, which brings us to Loki the mischievous god.
It’s Hammer Time, Thor-style!
Once the dust is settled and finally reaching the peak of Jotunheim, watch them spread Fey’s (Laufey) ashes and you’re free to do anything you want. From exploring the other realms OR just head back to your home sweet home and take a break for once because you might just get a shocking visitor. This is the first time ever where the camera actually cuts to black and Thor appears at your door step. We don’t know what’s his motive is upon appearing in front of Kratos but this might be due to the death of his brother, Baldur. We’ve never seen him appear even after the death of his son, Magni or Modi, so why now?
We have to take note that the death of Baldur signifying the event of Ragnarok is a very important event in Norse mythology. Because the foretelling deaths of Odin and even Thor himself is pretty much inevitable during Ragnarok, Thor appearing now could either be to kill Kratos or kill Loki before he could command his sons, the World Serpent and Fenrir, who will kill Odin based on mythology.
The Death of Kratos?
Another important piece of information that we’d like to highlight is the written future that Fey has written on murals all over the walls on Jotunheim. She had basically told the whole story of the life and adventures of her son, Atreus, to her Giant tribe. Now at the end of the mural as seen in the video above, we saw what perhaps to be Atreus lying on a chair with Kratos by his side. Kratos looked like he was on the verge of death and may seemed to be transferring something over to Atreus. Was that foreshadowing Kratos’ death to save Atreus? Was Thor’s appearance in the end was to kill Atreus before he could kill Odin and Thor?
All these are just speculations of course, but these are what we think will happen in the future. So many questions but we live it to our future selves to deal with. If you think there are other notable mythology events that could happen in the future, leave your thoughts right down below.
