The Chainsawman Opening Has a Ton of Movie References

The Chainsawman anime will premier today Studio Mappa has uploaded the anime’s opening to their Youtube channel and people have noticed it has a lot of references to a number of different movies.

The Twitter user @NezukoSocial has listed each of the movie references and listed them down in a Twitter thread:

From what we can gather, here is every movie that is referenced in the Chainsawman opening:

• No Country For Old Men
• The Big Lebowski
• Pulp Fiction
• Once Upon A Time in Hollywood
• Attack of The Killer Tomatoes
• Sadako vs Kayako
• The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
• Constantine
• Don’t Look Up (1996)
• Jacob’s Ladder
• Reservoir Dogs
• Fight Club
• Thor: Love and Thunder
• Evangelion

Additionally, there are also references to the painting ‘Manipulación De Los Medios’, the Chainsawman Author Tatsuki Fujimoto’s love of characters walking away from explosions and the opening features a couple of wildlife specimens: venus fly traps and Leucochloridium parasite.

The former is a plant that uses its sweet scent to lure in and eat flies, the latter is a parasite that infects snails and controls their minds. These are both seen in clips of the characters Denji and Makima together. Take that as you will.

Chainsawman takes a lot of inspiration from pulpy crime thrillers and horror movies of the 80s and 90s so perhaps it’s no surprise that there are so many references to them in its opening.

Chainsawman will begin streaming on the 12th of October.
