This week, the Brave Room welcomes back Alex to talk all things Metroidvania- the perfect game for the recovering Souls Addict still waiting for Elden Ring.
Metroidvanias have come a long way since the first Metroid – combining features with other titles like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as well as later souls-like elements to become games that reward exploration, first and foremost.
That being said, the level headed and Oreo-filled Alex also does a good job breaking down why titles like Metroid: Dread are so divisive- relying a lot on obtuse mechanics to keep players hooked on the game.
Wan also talks about his experience with modern metroidvania like the excellent Blasphemous, which combines Metroidvanias, Souls-likes and an inherent Catholicism to create a game that just screams obtuse quests.
Seriously, if you were ever curious about the Metroidvania genre, this is a good episode to listen to with two people who really like it wanting to talk about it.
The Brave Room is GamerBraves own podcast, hosted by “Wan” Amirul and Kit “How do I Metroid” Chew. It’s available on Anchor, YouTube and Spotify.
