We had the opportunity to try out METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER at Tokyo Game Show 2024, and the experience was nothing short of exhilarating. This faithful remake of the 2004 PlayStation 2 classic brings the iconic stealth action series into the modern era with stunning visuals and refined gameplay.
After the cinematic introduction, we dove into the gameplay on a PC build. The hands-on demo, lasting about 20 minutes, picked up right where the cutscene left off, with Snake landing in hostile territory. The first mission served as a tutorial, teaching players the basics of movement and climbing as we retrieved equipment from a nearby tree.
As we ventured deeper into the jungle, the game’s unique approach to stealth action became apparent. The environment itself posed as much of a threat as enemy soldiers, with a crocodile-infested swamp presenting our first major obstacle. Encountering Soviet soldiers provided options for both silent and loud approaches. Additionally, the environment offered creative opportunities for stealth takedowns.
While stealth proved challenging, with enemies quick to spot Snake, the alert system added depth to encounters. A 99-second window to break line of sight, followed by another 99 seconds of heightened enemy caution, created tense moments of cat-and-mouse gameplay.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of this remake is its visual overhaul. Nearly two decades after the original release, METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER brings the familiar scenes and characters to life with breathtaking detail. While our time with METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER was brief, it left a lasting impression. Moreover, the remake appears to strike a delicate balance between honoring the original’s legacy and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a modern stealth action game.
