We had the opportunity to try out the Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves hands-on demo at Tokyo Game Show 2024, and after 26 years of waiting, SNK’s legendary fighting game series shows promising signs of a triumphant return.
During our 30-minute demo session, we explored five of the game’s playable characters: Mai, Rock, Terry, Preecha, and Vox Reaper. The standout feature that immediately caught our attention was the innovative REV System, which adds a fresh strategic layer to the classic Fatal Fury formula.
The Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves hands-on demo introduces a customizable S.P.G. bar system that lets players choose when their power-ups activate based on their health gauge. Players can select from three distinct types: Accel Ratio, Flux Ratio, and Final Ratio, each activating at different health thresholds. Once your health reaches your chosen S.P.G. zone, you’ll gain access to enhanced abilities, including REV Blows, increased attack power, and gradual health regeneration.
Combat feels dynamic thanks to the REV System’s offensive toolkit. Players can unleash REV Arts, REV Accel, and REV Blows (when S.P.G. is active) until the REV Meter overheats. The system particularly shines during S.P.G. activation, making combo execution more accessible. A notable addition is the Wild Punish mechanic, indicated by blue shadows, which triggers when connecting hits after an opponent’s missed attack, creating unique combo opportunities through knockbacks or knockdowns.
Visually, the game stands out even among its fighting game peers. For newcomers, the Smart Style control scheme proves welcoming without sacrificing depth. This accessibility-focused option streamlines complex moves into simpler button combinations, making the game approachable while maintaining competitive potential.
