We had the opportunity to try out Fairy Tail 2 at Tokyo Game Show 2024, and the experience with the hands-on left us eagerly anticipating its release. This action RPG sequel to KOEI TECMO‘s 2020 game promises to immerse players in the thrilling Alvarez Empire Arc, bringing the beloved characters of the Fairy Tail guild to life once again.
As we dove into the 20-minute demo, the game immediately thrust us into the heart of the story. The game uses a turn-based RPG system where each character takes their turn to attack, but the twist lies in the SP (Special Points) mechanic. Players must balance between using normal attacks to accumulate SP and unleashing powerful skills that deplete this resource.
The elemental system adds another dimension to the combat strategy. Each skill and character has elemental affinities, creating a web of strengths and weaknesses that players must navigate. For instance, fire-based attacks are weak against ice and water but resist fire and lightning. Defensively, the game introduces a blocking mechanic that players activate by holding L1 when an enemy telegraphs an attack.
The “break gauge” system further deepens the combat, allowing players to stagger enemies and initiate devastating link attacks with teammates. Outside of combat, the game offers a degree of exploration. Players can freely roam the map, interact with the environment by breaking branches, and engage with various characters.
While we had limited hands-on time, Fairy Tail 2 appears to shape up as a treat for fans of the series. It offers the chance to relive key moments from the Alvarez Empire Arc, take control of beloved characters like Natsu and Lucy, and face off against major antagonists including Zeref and Acnologia.
