At Tokyo Game Show 2022, Bandai Namco Entertainment offered attendees to try out a demo of ONE PIECE Odyssey. This upcoming RPG slots in another story to add to the many, many other tales the long-running series already has.
This demo offered around 10 – 15 minutes of gameplay, which is hardly much more so when you’re a hyped fan anticipating its release. They showed up to form the longest queue at the Bandai Namco Entertainment booth to get their own shot.
THE DEVIL FRUIT TEASER
Due to the limited time frame available for the ONE PIECE Odyssey booth demo, this will not be a very comprehensive look. Additionally, the demo was entirely in Japanese, with some nuance likely lost due to the language barrier.
Characters have their own class, with a system that is reminiscent of rock-paper-scissors. Pending localization, the “weapon triangle” works like Brawler > Swordsman > Gunner > Brawler. As a turn-based RPG, you and the enemy will take turns. TP is a resource for executing powerful skills, with normal attacks being the only way you can generate TP with (at this stage anyway). Skills will be labelled accordingly if they’re melee, ranged, single- or multi-target. Additionally, there are elemental attacks and a variety of status effects.
We’ll be able to access a bestiary, through which we’ll be able to see more details on the monsters that the anime and comics don’t necessarily focus on.
When it comes to exploration, the demo allowed use of Luffy. According to the instruction manual, it seems there would be opportunities to control other characters as well. As you make your way through the game world, there will be actions to interact with the environment, like aiming and shooting and grappling.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Alas, in the interest of not holding up the queue, more time could not be spent on the demo, which itself felt far too short. The story seems fully narrated from what little of it could be experienced, so that means your favourite voice actors have reprised their roles.
We’ll see if we can get a demo outside of the event prior to its release, so we shall wait alongside with you.
