First announced in December 2017, Soulcalibur VI is almost upon us, following a long hiatus. The game is scheduled for a global release on 19 October 2018 for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Glimpses of the game here and there, where it made a proper showing at Evo 2018, to a fairly warm reception. We had the opportunity to attend the Tokyo Game Show to attend an interview with Soulcalibur series producer Motohiro Okubo.

Soulcalibur VI
The reason behind the six year gap between the two games was pretty much given right off the bat, as the producer had much difficulty getting the latest iteration of the game approved, with much internal paperwork done. When asked if this will be the last game in the series if it does not do well, Okubo assured that the game is still an important IP for Bandai Namco, although conceded to the fact that it would be hard getting it off the ground again.
Okubo, who is also producer for Tekken 7, made a mention as to the unique position Soulcalibur is in as a weapons-based fighter and it was important to differentiate it from other 3D fighters by highlighting its core concepts. The team went back to review the entire franchise to see what users liked most about it, particularly the fast-paced combat system.
Back to Soulcalibur VI itself, Okubo touched one two of its game modes, the first being the Soul Chronicle, which also doubles as its story mode. Beginning in 1583, the origins of the Soul Edge and Soulcalibur swords will be explored, with Kilik as the primary character. Of course, other characters will be a focus as well. Then we have the Libra of Soul mode which offers players more freedom in terms of creating their own character and the ability to recruit allies to the cause. It will intertwine with the Soul Chronicle mode at some point in time, interestingly enough.
