Gungrave was a third-person shooter game that was released for the PlayStation 2 back in 2002. The game had built a community which spawned an animated series with the help from Yasuhiro Nightow, the creator of Trigun, and Kosuke Fujishima, who’s involved with the Oh My Goddess!, You’re Under Arrest and Sakura Wars series.
As the first game was developed by Red Entertainment, a Japanese company, Gungrave: Overdose was developed by Ikusabune Co. Ltd. but was published by Red Entertainment in Japan. The Gungrave game IP went silent for more than 10 years but was picked up by a Korean studio, Iggymob, which launched a Gungrave VR for the PlayStation VR back in December 2017. They are also the developer for the upcoming Gungrave GORE with Red Entertainment as the publisher.
Gungrave GORE
With their last game, Gungrave: Overdose, on the PlayStation 2 back in 2004, the game has gone through a lot of upgrades now that it’s coming to the PlayStation 4. Of course, we will be expecting to see a massive upgrade in the graphics department and the gameplay experience. If you’ve played the previous Gungrave games, the game is mainly focused on shooting enemies, defeating bosses and destroying the environment.
Story
The game’s story will revolve around Grave and Mika taking down the organization Millennion that is spreading SEED – a drug that’s been circulating the city. Though they have been trying to take down the distributors of SEED, this time Grave and Mika will be joined together with new characters to take down the main organization, Millennion, instead. But they will also be facing with another clan called the Raven Clan which they will destroy eventually.
As Mika stumbles upon a small organization that shares the same aim of destroying Milennion, Mika took the liberty to lead the organization and called it “El-Al-Canhel” along with Grave by her side. With the organization, we can expect to meet new characters and a new gunslinger called Kugashira Bunji. We’re not sure if he will be a playable character in the game but we hope we do!
Gameplay
Based on previous Gungrave games, we are usually bonded to a linear storyline where we go through stages. Back in the first Gungrave game on the PlayStation 2, we were greeted with bad camera angles and a bunch of loading screens every time we progress through a floor. However, that has been improved in Gungrave: Overdose where we don’t go through much loading screens and going through the stage was seamless as ever.
Though, those days are gone as this time in Gungrave GORE, we are free to run around in the limited open-world! As the story brings us through Southeast Asia, those of us who are living in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Cambodia can expect to see some familiar scenes from your own country! Of course, the game is still in development so there will be more SEA countries we can expect to be in there once the game is completed.
As for gameplay, we’re still going to be able to wreck havoc on the environments as Yasuhiro Nightow who’s overseeing the project aims to keep that in Gungrave GORE as well. So we can expect to have more shooting and destruction over our environments along with new special effects, a new Coffin and a new Transform Action! The previous Full Break actions are also in the game but we’ll expect more varieties from it rather than just the Death Blow or Bullet Dance.
The game is slated to be released in 2019 for the PlayStation 4. It is unsure if the game will be exclusive only for the PlayStation 4 but we will find out soon. For more info, you can check out their official site but it’s pretty limited info – for now.
