Looking to challenge the crown held by Bandai Namco in the virtual dating sim space is South Korea-based Smilegate Entertainment with Focus On You. That said, the only real similarity between this and Summer Lesson is that they both take place virtually.
FOCUS on YOU
Scheduled for a release in spring 2019, Focus on You has you taking on the role of a high school senior with a passion for photography. One day, while taking photographs at a nearby park you chance upon the game’s sole heroine, Song Ah-young, whose interests include cosplay, K-Pop and watching YouTube. She agrees to model for you for the day but soon disappears out of embarrassment. However she shows up again the following day at the cafe where you work as a part-timer, asking you to take more pictures of her.
The conversation system in Focus On You will be “emotions-related”, so we are looking at a multiple choice format which is not unusual for these sort of games, although they will be voice activated, which is a plus for immersion. Photography seems to be a central aspect of this game, although we do not know at this point how much it will impact the overall experience. Photo Kano, the last known game to incorporate such a system, also shared a similar theme, although the photography in that was merely to fill up an album for later perusal.
As for the heroine herself, Smilegate revealed that they had engaged the a real life idol actress for the motion capture work, although they would not reveal as to who she is at this juncture.
Focus On You will launch with a total of six chapters including the prologue. A new heroine and additional story chapters will be introduced later on. Currently, there’s no official site erected yet but you can always check out Smilegate’s official site for any updates and news!
