It has been a month since Tetris Effect was released for the Playstation 4. Since its release, the game has garnered worldwide attention and praise. Now, we have decided to do our own review on the critically-acclaimed game and determine whether it is worth all the praise.
Gameplay
Nothing much can be said on the gameplay other than it is Tetris. Other than standard Tetris mechanics, Tetris Effect brings along a new mechanic called “Zone”. The “Zone” allows players to stop time and drop multiple blocks during the duration without pressure. However, as a player of Tetris with much more simple mechanics, it takes a while to get used to the “Zone” mechanic. Basically, the overall gameplay Tetris with a new mechanic.
Music
Now, the game has pretty good music and has that techno feel. The music is in sync with the theme and speed of the game. For example, when the game speed is low, the music played is slow as well. This applies vice versa. In addition, the sound effects when you align the blocks is quite satisfying. Every time when you align a block, a beat plays which is quite a nice touch. The music keeps players drawn into the game.
Visuals
The game is a visual beauty. Forget about the old classic look of Tetris, this one sets the standard for what new Tetris games should be like. The bright visuals keep the game lively. Each stage features different visuals hence it is not always the same. However, the visuals may be distracting for some people. We advise that you get used to it quickly for better experience.
Although it is not necessary, we recommend playing on the Playstation VR. The device gives you a full blown experience as the visuals surround you. Expect bright colors dancing around you as various shapes form from these colors. In addition, you can rotate the board to the blocks in full 3D.
Overall verdict
Tetris Effect truly deserves the praise and worldwide attention it has received for the past month. Although the gameplay has not changed much other than the additional mechanic, the game truly shines in the music and visual department. With both aspects, the game keeps you playing for more. Regardless if you are a fan of Tetris or not, you should try out this game.
On a side note, it is important to take breaks in between games as the visuals may cause minor discomfort especially with Playstation VR.
