Apple TV+ has released the first trailer for their new Tetris movie. This is a biographical film about video game developer Henk Rogers who was hired by Nintendo to get into the Soviet Union and acquire the rights to Tetris.
The movie will be coming to Apple TV on the 31st of March 2023. You can watch the trailer below:
“Taron Egerton stars in a new Apple Original Film inspired by the true story of how one man risked his life to outsmart the KGB and turn Tetris into a worldwide sensation.”
The film is based on the real-life story of how Tetris was brought to international markets. For those that don’t know, Tetris was created by the Soviet Union Engineer Alexey Pajitnov and as soon as the game leaked to other countries, a race was formed to get the rights between different companies. One of said companies was Nintendo who wanted Tetris to be the pack-in title for their upcoming Gameboy. In order to do this, they hired Dutch developer and partner Henk Rogers to go to Russia and get distribution rights.
The legal battle for Tetris is one of the crazier stories of the video game industry and it’ll be interesting to see it come to film.
The film is being directed by Jon S. Baird who passively directed the critically acclaimed comedy-drama Stan & Ollie. Here is the confirmed cast with Taron Egerton (Kingsman, Rocket Man) in the lead:
- Taron Egerton as Henk Rogers
- Toby Jones as Robert Stein
- Nikita Yefremov as Alexey Pajitnov
- Roger Allam as Robert Maxwell
- Anthony Boyle as Kevin Maxwell
- Togo Igawa as Hiroshi Yamauchi
- Ken Yamamura as Minoru Arakawa
- Ben Miles as Howard Lincoln
- Matthew Marsh as Mikhail Gorbachev
- Rick Yune as Larry
The Tetris Movie will launch on Apple TV+ on the 31st of March 2023.
