Iconic sci-fi series Terminator is branching out from Hollywood films and into anime, with an anime adaptation coming soon on Netflix.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mattson Tomlin, the co-writer for next year’s “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson, will serve as executive producer and showrunner for this adaptation. Skydance Media, the production company that owns the rights to the Terminator series, will team up with Production I.G to bring the anime to life.
In a statement, Tomlin revealed:
“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I’m honoured that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”
Currently, it is unknown whether we will see an anime version of Arnold Schwarzenegger or an entirely different Terminator model. It is also possible that the Netflix anime might take place in a different universe from the Terminator films.
Thankfully, Production I.G. is no stranger to sci-fi anime. The studio worked on the legendary sci-fi anime Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. They also worked on acclaimed on other acclaimed anime in the genre, such as Psycho-Pass and Guilty Crown. Fans of sports anime will recognise Production I.G as the studio behind Haikyuu!! and Kuroko no Basket.
