The upcoming version 1.08 update for Tekken 8 brings exciting new content to the popular fighting game. We recently had the opportunity to try out DLC 3, courtesy of Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia. This preview on the update which introduces the fan-favorite character Mishima Heihachi, along with a new stage, story content, and various quality-of-life improvements.
Back from the Dead?
Despite his apparent demise in Tekken 7, Heihachi Mishima makes a surprising comeback in this DLC. His return is explained in the new free story content, “Episode: Unforgotten Echoes,” which also features Eddy and Lidia. This side story ties the post-launch characters into the main plot, exploring themes related to the Mishima Style Fighting Karate and a group known as the Tekken Monks.
The story, divided into chapters of approximately 10-15 minutes each, delves into the rich lore of the Tekken universe. It explores themes centered around the Mishima Style Fighting Karate and introduces a group known as the Tekken Monks, who are apparently targeting remnants of the Mishima Zaibatsu following Heihachi’s disappearance and Nina Williams’ departure.
Heihachi’s moveset in Tekken 8 feels both familiar and fresh. While some of his signature moves have been altered, his overall style is more dynamic and powerful. New additions include the Thunder God and Wind God stances, adding depth to his gameplay. The character seems more approachable for newcomers while still offering a high skill ceiling for veteran players.
While longtime Heihachi players will recognize many of his signature techniques, several have undergone notable changes. For instance, his popular Spinning Demon (also known as Hell Sweep) now features an impressive follow-up move involving a jumping spin kick. These alterations aim to make Heihachi feel fresh while retaining his core identity. Two new stances have been added to Heihachi’s arsenal: the Thunder God stance and the Wind God stance. These additions provide new strategic options and combo potential, increasing the character’s depth.
A New Battleground and In-Game Collaborations
The DLC introduces a new stage called Genmaji Temple, set in a secluded mountain retreat. This visually striking location changes atmosphere throughout the day, transitioning from a solemn daytime scene to an evening with falling leaves, and finally to a silent, snowy night. The stage plays a significant role in the new story content.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Genmaji Temple plays a significant role in the new “Episode: Unforgotten Echoes” story, tying the stage closely to the narrative content of the DLC. This integration of stage and story elements adds an extra layer of depth to the Tekken 8 experience.
Version 1.08 brings exciting new customization options through collaborations with real-world brands, adding a touch of contemporary style to the game’s character aesthetics.
The partnership with Nike introduces two pairs of sneakers inspired by iconic characters Jin and Kazuya. These exclusive in-game items will be available through the free tier of “TEKKEN FIGHT PASS ROUND 3,” which launches alongside version 1.08. This collaboration allows players to outfit their favorite fighters with stylish footwear that reflects the essence of Tekken’s most famous rivalry.
Additionally, Tekken 8 teams up with Korean eyewear brand Gentle Monster to bring their distinctive style into the game. As a special offer, this fashionable accessory will be available for free in the TEKKEN SHOP for a limited time following the release of version 1.08.
These collaborations not only provide players with new ways to personalize their characters but also demonstrate Tekken’s cultural impact and its ability to bridge the gap between the gaming world and real-life fashion.
Quality of Life Improvements
The update brings several enhancements to improve the player experience:
- Online Practice: The TEKKEN DOJO now allows two players to practice together online, replicating most features from the offline practice mode.
- Customizable Main Menu: Players can now choose which character model to display on the main menu screen, with access to preset costumes.
- Other gameplay adjustments and balance changes are likely included, though specific details were not provided in the preview.
With its mix of new content and gameplay refinements, Tekken 8’s version 1.08 update aims to keep the fighting game fresh and engaging for both new and returning players.
