Reports of a team of surgeons out in Switzerland had recently pulled off a successful surgery on a pig that was located thousands of miles, specifically 5790 miles away from the European country. But that’s not even the craziest part because what is unbelievable is that they actually performed the surgery with the help of Sony’s Dualsense and PlayStation Move controllers.
The miraculous feat was the fruit of the collaboration between Switzerland’s Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The surgery was performed by involving two operators: a clinician in the operating room in Hong Kong and a remote expert at an operator console in Zurich.
CU Medicine’s assistant professor Dr Shannon Melissa Chan from the Department of Surgery commented that “Teleoperated endoscopy offers not only remote surgical training and mentoring but also immediate diagnostic and surgical care in remote areas, particularly when local expertise is lacking. A remote expert can even instruct trained nurses to perform the procedures.”
Furthermore, the Head of the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, ETH Zurich, Dr Bradley Nelson, mentioned that “In the next step of our research, we will be performing tele-endoscopy on a human stomach. In addition to endoscopic procedures, such as cancer screening, there is a lot of potential for this technology.”. However, there was no confirmation on whether the team will continue to involve the use of the same controllers or any PlayStation tech.
Nevertheless, the gaming world is at awe with the accomplishments of the teams involved and wishes them the best of luck in their future medical endeavours.
