A new manga, Superman vs Meshi has been announced, putting one of the most iconic superheroes against mankind’s greatest threat- figuring out what to have for lunch.
Coming in the next issue of Evening Magazine on the 22nd of June, Superman vs Meshi will have Superman hitting the streets of Japan, trying out various eateries.
While this sounds like a bizarre fan comic, it’s not- the manga is officially licensed by Kodansha and DC comics. On top of that it will feature interiors by Kitago Kai, as well as writing by Miyagawa Satoshi.
There’s been no word on how long the manga will be, and if DC will bring it west-side with official English translations.
Kitago Kai has also previously done other surreal comedy such as Mii Chanto Watashi (Me and Me) as well as Neko, to We Love Cats.
Not The First Time Japan’s Chosen Food Over Violence
Funnily enough this isn’t the first time manga has taken a popular character and given it a food-based spinoff. the Fate series had also done the same previously with Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family (Lovingly shortened to Emiya Gohan). Rather than being about mages summoning the spirits of famous heroes to brutally murder each other for power, Emiya Gohan was about the day-to-day life of series protagonist Shirou Emiya, as he cooks meals for all the characters of Fate/Stay Night.
Emiya Gohan went on to get its own anime adaptation by Demon Slayer studio UFOtable, and most recently a game for the Nintendo Switch.
