Chihiro Fujioka, who directed the SNES classic Super Mario RPG: Legend of The Seven Stars has said he would like to make a Super Mario RPG 2
In an interview with the youtube channel MinnMax, Fujioka said that he had a great interest in making another Super Mario RPG and that he would like it to be the last game that he works on.
“Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one…in my career, I’ve been involved with a lot of games, and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game if possible. I think Mario & Luigi is cool, but I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG where you’re only controlling Mario”.
Super Mario RPG was a Mario spin-off collaboration between Nintendo and Squaresoft (now Square Enix). While the game never received a sequel, it did have two spiritual successor series. Paper Mario (of which the first game was originally titled Super Mario RPG 2) and the Mario & Luigi series.
Fujioka actually worked on the Mario & Luigi series as a staff member at developer AlphaDream.
The status of Mario RPGs however is currently not the brightest. AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy in 2019 meaning that there will likely be no more Mario & Luigi games and the Paper Mario series has strayed away from being RPGs in favor of more general puzzle adventure games.
With this in mind, there is certainly a niche that a Super Mario RPG 2 could fill if Nintendo were to give it the green light.
