Louisiana-based film production company Stellarblade LLC sues Sony and developer Shift Up, alleging trademark infringement following the release of the PlayStation 5 action-adventure game Stellar Blade. The complaint, filed in a Louisiana court, targets Sony, Shift Up, and Sony’s unnamed liability insurance company. Stellarblade LLC and its owner, Griffith Chambers Mehaffey, claim that the game’s use of a similar name negatively impacts their business.
The company argues that since the game’s reveal under the name Stellar Blade in 2021, their customers have faced difficulties finding information about Stellarblade’s business online.
Mehaffey’s lawyer stated that the defendants’ superior resources have effectively monopolized online search results for Stellarblade, pushing Mehaffey’s established business into “digital obscurity” and threatening his livelihood. The lawsuit also points out that Shift Up and Sony’s Stellar Blade trademark, filed in January 2023, is “confusingly similar” to Stellarblade’s own trademark, filed in June 2023. Mehaffey cites similarities in color schemes and a stylized ‘S’ as evidence.
If successful, the lawsuit seeks damages, attorney fees, and an injunction preventing Shift Up and Sony from using the name “Stellar Blade” or any similar name in the future. Additionally, the plaintiffs request the defendants to surrender all “Stellar Blade” material in their possession to be destroyed.
Sony released the game Stellar Blade, originally known as “Project Eve,” earlier this year for the PlayStation 5, and it received positive reviews for its combat and unique appeal. As of now, Sony and Shift Up have not publicly responded to the lawsuit. The gaming community awaits further developments in this legal dispute between the film production company and the video game industry giants.
