On Star Wars Day/4th May 2021, the official Twitter account of Tamagotchi announced that an R2-D2 Tamagotchi is coming soon. It appears that Bandai and Lucasfilm are partnering up to bring the iconic Star Wars character into the handheld electronic pet device.

Not much is known other than the announcement of the collaboration. There is no release date or mention of a new product. In fact, the tweet and the link to Bandai Toys website merely stated to “stay tuned for more news.”
For those who are unfamiliar with Tamagotchi, it is a pet-raising simulator that was hugely popular back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Players raise digital pets in a small handheld device and have to feed and take care of the creature.

Interestingly enough, Star Wars has featured some of its characters in other digital pet toys in the past. Yoda and R2-D2 have appeared in Tiger Electronics’ line of Giga Pets toys. You can check them out on eBay.

With R2-D2 making its debut in Tamagotchi, only time will tell how the droid will be fed, or if it can even poop!
Stay tuned to the Tamagotchi Twitter account for future updates on the Star Wars collaboration.
