Square Enix has announced that Yosuke Matsuda will no longer be president of the company and that the position will now be filled by the current Company Director Takashi Kiryu.
The decision is currently pending board approval which will be done at the 34th Annual Shareholders’ Meeting in June. Here is the stated reason for the change:
“Under the rapid change of business environment surrounding the entertainment industry, the proposed change is intended to reshape the management team with the goal of adopting ever-evolving technological innovations and maximizing the creativity of [Square Enix Holdings Co. Ltd.]’s group in order to deliver even greater entertainment to its customers around the world.”
Yosuke Matsuda has been President of Square Enix since April 2013, meaning that he has been leading the company for just over ten years. His time has seen both highs and lows within the company although he has been criticized in the past couple of years for leading the company’s investment into NFTs and Blockchain technology.
Takashi Kiryu began working at Square Enix in 2020, first as the General Manager Corporate Planning Division, then moving on to Chief Strategy Officer, then Executive Officer. He was last promoted to director of Square Enix in June 2022.
Notable titles released by Square Enix this year include the recently released Octopath Traveler II, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, and the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI.
