Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro, set to launch on November 7, 2024. The reveal came during a technical presentation hosted by Mark Cerny, the lead architect for the PS5 Pro.
The PS5 Pro boasts significant upgrades over its predecessor, targeting enhanced performance and graphics fidelity. Key features include:
- Upgraded GPU: 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory, enabling up to 45% faster rendering.
- Advanced Ray Tracing: Capability to cast rays at double or triple the speeds of the current PS5.
- AI-Driven Upscaling: Introduction of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution for improved image clarity.
- PS5 Pro Game Boost: Potential performance improvements for over 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games.
- Enhanced Image Quality: Improved resolution for select PS4 games.
- Latest Wireless Technology: Wi-Fi 7 support in compatible territories.
- Additional Features: VRR and 8K gaming support.
The console will maintain compatibility with existing PS5 accessories, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, and various controllers. It will feature a 2TB SSD and come pre-installed with Astro’s Playroom. Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony’s Platform Business Group, emphasized that they developed the PS5 Pro with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind, addressing requests for higher fidelity graphics and smoother frame rates at 60FPS.
Several game developers will provide free updates to take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s capabilities, including titles like Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The PlayStation 5 Pro will be available for pre-order starting September 26, 2024, with a retail price of $699.99 USD. Sony will offer it as a disc-less console, with the option for consumers to purchase a separate disc drive.
