Sony has released a new system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3), bringing the aging console up to version 4.92 despite the system turning 19 years old this year. According to the official patch notes, update 4.92 improves overall system performance while also renewing the Blu-ray player encryption key to ensure continued disc playback functionality.

The update is largely focused on maintaining the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) encryption key, which periodically expires as part of the copyright-protection technology that requires matching keys on both discs and consoles to play new films. Unlike the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which automatically renew their encryption keys, the PS3 requires manual system updates to maintain this functionality.
This type of update has become an annual occurrence for the PS3, and Sony will likely continue this support pattern until it officially discontinues maintenance for the platform. The company ceased manufacturing PlayStation 3 consoles in 2017, approximately a decade after its initial launch.
The PlayStation 3 reached lifetime sales of 87.4 million units as of March 2017, falling short of Sony’s other major console releases including the PS1, PS2, and PS4. For comparison, the PlayStation 5 has currently sold 75 million units, with sales tracking similarly to the PS4 at the same point in its lifecycle.
