Sony has revealed plans to adapt two of its successful PlayStation franchises for the big screen. During their CES 2025 press conference, PlayStation Productions announced movie adaptations for both Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn.
The Helldivers film, based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ recent smash hit Helldivers 2, comes at a time when the game has achieved remarkable success, selling 12 million copies in just 12 weeks to become PlayStation Studios’ fastest-selling title. The movie will be a collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures, though specific details about casting or production timeline of Helldivers remain under wraps. The game, which draws inspiration from Starship Troopers, follows soldiers defending Super Earth against various alien threats while operating under a “Managed Democracy” system.
In parallel, PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures are joining forces to bring Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn to theaters. The post-apocalyptic adventure, which follows machine hunter Aloy, is in early development stages. Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating: “Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen.”
Columbia Pictures, who previously found success with their 2022 Uncharted film adaptation starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, will handle the Horizon Zero Dawn production. No release window has been announced for either project. These announcements continue Sony’s strategy of expanding their gaming properties into other media formats, building on their existing portfolio of game-to-screen adaptations.
