SEGA has revealed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be getting a Closed Network Test starting February 21, giving players their first hands-on experience with the upcoming racing title. The announcement came during Sony’s February State of Play, accompanied by a new trailer showcasing the game’s innovative features.
The trailer highlighted the game’s signature “Travel Rings” mechanic, which allows racers to transition between different worlds mid-race. These portals transport players through various iconic Sonic locations, including Metal Harbor and Chao Park, with the lead racer choosing the destination for the second lap.
Players can expect extensive customization options, with characters no longer being restricted to specific vehicles. The game introduces a comprehensive vehicle customization system where players can modify colors, decals, and even interior details. Each character and vehicle combination offers unique parameters for speed, acceleration, and handling.

The game also features an RPG-inspired Gadget system, allowing players to equip various perks before races. Additionally, fans of the Sonic Riders series will be excited to see the return of Extreme Gear hoverboards, offering an alternative boost-based racing style.
According to Sonic Team Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds aims to combine elements from previous Sonic Racing titles while introducing new innovative features. The game will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch later this year.

While PS5 players can sign up for the upcoming Closed Network Test, it’s worth noting that the test will include most features except for the Extreme Gear system, which is being saved for the full release.
