Sega has announced that Sonic Origins, a new collection of the 4 original Genesis Sonic games is coming to modern consoles. Sonic Origins goes on sale on June 23, the same day as Sonic’s birthday!
This digital remaster includes the titles Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. You can relive the experience of seeing those nostalgic sprites on the latest platforms with modern framerate performance.
Sonic Origins features new and improved content from “Anniversary Mode’ to ‘Missions’, ‘Museum’, and more. Or you can stick to the basics in ‘Classic Mode’ and experience the game just how players did back in the day.
Here are the details of each new mode:
- Anniversary Mode
In “Anniversary Mode”, you can run through at Sonic speed on a large 16:9 screen without having to see the time over, continue, or game over screens. - Classic Mode
In “Classic Mode”, players can enjoy the game in its original form with the original rules. If you make a mistake, the number of Lives will decrease, and if you use up all of them, the game will be over. *You can restart with 3 Lives if you still have a chance to Continue. - Boss Rush
In “Boss Rush”, you need to continuously battle all the Bosses that appear in the series. - Mirror Mode
Clear the titles to unlock “Mirror Mode” where you can challenge yourself in the flipped world! - Story Mode
Brand new animated scenes link the stories of the four Sonic classics in “Story Mode”. Zip through the iconic titles condensed into one epic adventure for the first time! - Mission Mode
Exciting and thrilling Missions await in “Mission Mode”. Challenge yourself by clearing Missions to get Coins! - Museum
Unlock never-before-seen content, such as some well-kept secrets from the development stages of the original games, and view them in the “Museum”! As you progress through the game, you will automatically unlock items in the “Normal Collection”. You can also use Coins acquired from “Boss Rush” and “Missions” to unlock items in the “Premium Collection”. - My Data & Ranking
Record your best time for each Act and check out the Ranking to see players’ times around the world! Run through as quick as you can and aim for the top spot in the World Ranking!
In Anniversary Mode you can choose to play as either Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, although Knuckles isn’t playable on Sonic CD.
The game will also feature brand new animated cutscenes across each game.
Sonic Origins Different Editions
Unfortunately, there has already been a little controversy with Sonic Origins as Sega has decided to release the game with multiple different editions featuring different amounts of content, similar to many EA and Ubisoft published titles.
While some have defended this decision as there are technically only two editions, many fans have derided this practice, seeing the table as confusing and greedy on Sega’s part considering the collection is already $40.00 for games that are over 20 years old.
Really happy to see Sonic origins pick up the trend of Assassin’s Creed locking in game content behind multiple special editions, it definitely doesn’t make it more confusing and inconvenience me as a buyer. HAAAAAAAA (Actually, I hate this a lot!!!) pic.twitter.com/1QxiliI7BN
