Tsuburaya has announced the new release date for Shin Ultraman , the cinematic adaptation of their iconic tokusatsu hero.
In a new short trailer, they announced that Shin Ultraman would have a May 13th, 2022 release date, though no other information was given regarding the upcoming movie.
Shin Ultraman has been a project wrapped in secrecy- we’ve barely seen any footage of it, despite the fact it was supposed to be released this year.
Unfortunately, the movie had to be delayed due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, though enough of the movie had been finished that director Hideaki Anno could also start work on Shin Kamen Rider, his next tokusatsu love letter movie.
We did get a better look at Ultraman’s signature Spacium Beam, where he does the now-iconic pose. It looks like the movie will be going for a much more traditional special effects style, instead of having the beam be covered in high end special effects as a destructive beam of energy shoots out of Ultraman’s arm.
Hideaki Anno is best known as the visionary creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of the most present anime ever made. In recent years he’s also been doing more live action movies, having first made the critically beloved Shin Godzilla, before being announced to be working on Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider.
